Yasmin is a combination of birth control medication that contains drospirenone and Ethinylestradiol. Yasmin contains female hormones and prevents pregnancy by preventing ovulation and causing changes to your cervical mucus and uterine lining to make it hard for sperm to reach the uterus and for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.

• Ask your doctor for when to start using Yasmin. It is often started on the first day of your menstrual period, or the first Sunday after your period.
• Yasmin comes as Yasmin 21 or Yasmin 28. Both medications contain 21 active medications. Yasmin 28 also contains 7 reminder pills.
• Yasmin should be taken once a day with or without food.
• Take Yasmin at the same time each day, 24 hours apart. Taking Yasmin at bedtime of after your evening meal can help to decrease stomach upset and nausea.
• Start with the first pill in the package and take them in the correct order.
• If you are using Yasmin 21, take one pill daily for 21 days and then do not take any pills for the next 7 days. Start a new pack after 7 days whether or not you have your period.
• If you are using Yasmin 28 take one active pill daily for 21 days and then take a reminder pill for 7 days. Start a new pack the next day whether or not you have your period.
• If you do not get your period, speak to your doctor.
• Use another method of birth control for the first seven days of the first time that you are using Yasmin.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history especially of adrenal gland disorder, kidney disease, high blood pressure, heart problems, heart disease, coronary artery disease, circulation problems, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, liver disease, cancer, severe migraine headaches, heart attack, stroke, blood clots, jaundice, high levels of potassium in your blood, triglycerides, underactive thyroid, diabetes, migraines, gallbladder disease or depression.
• If you will have major surgery.
• If you are smoke and are over 35. You should not take Yasmin as this smoking can greatly increase your risk of stroke, heart attack or blood clots.
• If you are overweight.

Other information you should also know:

• Pregnancy is more likely if you miss pills, take your pills at different times of the day or start a pack late.
• You should not take Yasmin if you are pregnant or if you have recently had a baby.
• Yasmin may increase your risk of stroke, heart attack or blood clots.
• Yasmin may pass into breast milk and harm a nursing infant. Do not breast-feed while taking Yasmin.

Common side effects of Yasmin:

• Changes to your menstrual periods.

• Nausea or vomiting.

• Mood changes.
• Weight gain.

• Changes to the pattern or severity of migraines.
• Swelling in your hands, ankles or feet.
• Signs of increased blood pressure including blurred vision, severe headache or pounding in your neck or ears.
• Symptoms of liver problems including tiredness, loss of appetite, upper stomach pain, dark urine, clay-colored stools or jaundice.
• Signs of a blood clot including stabbing chest pain, shortness of breath, sudden vision loss, coughing up blood or pain, warmth and swelling in one or both legs.
• Stroke symptoms including slurred speech, sudden severe headache, problems with vision or balance or a sudden numbness or weakness especially on one side of the body.
• Heart attack symptoms including nausea, sweating, chest pain or pressure or a pain spreading to your jaw or shoulder.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

Both medications contain 21 active medication pills. Yasmin 28 also contains 7 reminder pills to take every day between medication cycles. With Yasmin 21, you should just wait 7 days between cycles taking no pills.
