Spiriva Respimat is an inhaler prescribed to treat asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) and symptoms including shortness of breath, chest tightness, wheezing and coughing. Spiriva contains tiotropium bromide which works by relaxing and opening your air passages which makes breathing easier. Spiriva Respimat is not a rescue inhaler to be used to relieve sudden shortness of breath but needs to be used regularly in order for it to be effective.

Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Before using Spiriva Respimat for the first time, or if it has not been used in over three days, prime your inhaler by spraying it away from your face until you see a slow-moving mist.
• Inhale Spiriva orally. Put your lips tightly around the mouthpiece to avoid getting this medication in your eyes.
• Wait at least a minute before using any other inhalers.
• Rinse your mouth out with water without swallowing after each use of Spiriva. This can help to prevent dry mouth or irritation.
• It can take between four and eight weeks to feel the effect of Spiriva Respimat. Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history especially of irregular heartbeat, kidney disease, prostate disease or urinary problems.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
• If you are breast-feeding.

Other information you should also know:

• You should make sure that all of your doctors know that you are using tiotropium before any surgery or dental surgery.
• Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of Spiriva.
• Spiriva Respimat can make you dizzy or blur your vision. Do not drive or do any other activity which requires clear vision or alertness until it can be done safely.

Common side effects of Spiriva:

• Cold symptoms such as sinus pain, sore throat, stuffy nose or runny nose.
• Dry mouth.
• Blurred vision.
• Painful urination.
• Constipation.
• Upset stomach.
• Chest pain or a fast heart rate.

If you have any of the following Spiriva side effects, seek medical help:

• Breathing problems including wheezing or choking after using.
• Sore or white patches on your mouth, lips or tongue.
• Little or no urination.
• Burning or painful urination.
• Eye pain or redness.
• Vision changes such as seeing halos around lights.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Spiriva?

If you miss a dose of Spiriva, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose. Do not use Spiriva more than twice in a 24-hour period.

How long does it take Spiriva to work?

It can take between four and eight weeks to feel the effect of Spiriva Respimat.
