Revatio contains sildenafil citrate and is prescribed to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) as well as improving the exercise capacity in people. PAH is a result of high blood pressure in the blood vessels which carry blood into your lungs. This can cause shortness of breath, dizziness and tiredness. Sildenafil Citrate works by relaxing the muscles of your blood vessels in order to increase blood flow around your body. By decreasing high blood pressure in your lungs, your heart and lungs can work more effectively which improves your ability to exercise.

• Revatio may be taken with or without food and is typically taken three times a day, six hours apart.
• Do not take more than your doctor’s recommended dose. Taking more of this medication or taking it more frequently will not improve your condition any quicker but it may increase your risk of side effects.
• Revatio is most effective when taken regularly. Try to take this medication at the same time every day.
• Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history especially of blood problems, blood cell disorders, heart problems, high or low blood pressure, stroke, liver disease, stomach disease, stomach ulcer, dehydration, retinitis pigmentosa or blindness in one or both eyes.
• If you have been told not to have sex for medical reasons or if you have ever had an erection which was painful or lasted over four hours.
• If you have any penis conditions including angulation, fibrosis, scarring or Peyronie’s disease.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
• If you are breast-feeding.

Other information you should also know:

• Taking alcohol or marijuana while taking Revatio can increase the risk of side effects. Limit your amount of these substances or speak to your doctor for more information.
• Revatio may cause vision problems or dizziness. You should not drive or do any other activity which requires alertness until it can be done safely.
• Revatio should not be taken by anyone younger than 18.

Common side effects of Revatio:

• Muscle pain or back pain.
• Sleep problems.
• Headaches or dizziness.
• Vision changes such as blurred vision or changes to your color vision.
• Upset stomach.
• Warmth, redness or a tingly feeling.
• Runny or stuffed nose.
• Nosebleeds.

If you have any of the following sildenafil citrate side effects, seek medical help:

• Severe shortness of breath.
• Feeling lightheaded or that you might pass out.
• Irregular heartbeat.
• A cough with foamy mucus.
• Swelling in your hands, ankles or feet.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What is the difference between Revatio and Viagra?

Both Viagra and Revatio contain the active ingredient sildenafil and increase blood flow around the body by relaxing your muscles. However, Revatio and Viagra are prescribed for different conditions and come in different strengths. Revatio only comes in a 20mg strength while Viagra is available in 25mg, 50mg and 100mg. You should not take both medications and should only take what your doctor prescribes for you.
