Ranexa is prescribed to treat chronic angina which is an ongoing chest pain or pressure which is caused by the heart not receiving enough oxygen. Ranexa contains ranolazine ER and works by improving blood flow which helps your heart to work more efficiently. Ranexa should not be used to treat an acute attack of angina.

• Ranexa is usually taken twice a day and can be taken with or without food.
• Swallow Ranexa whole without chewing or crushing the capsules.
• Ranolazine must be used regularly in order to be most effective and should not be taken to treat a sudden angina attack.
• Continue taking this medication even when you feel well. Do not stop taking ranolazine without talking with your doctor.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history especially of a heart rhythm disorder, liver disease, kidney disease or QT syndrome.
• If any of your family suffer from QT syndrome.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
• If you are breast-feeding.

Other information you should also know:

• Ranexa should be taken regularly to be most effective when treating chronic angina. It should not be taken to stop an acute angina attack.
• Ranolazine may cause dizziness or lightheadedness. You should not drive or do any other activity which requires alertness until you can do it safely.

Common side effects of Ranexa:

• Headache or dizziness.
• Nausea.
• Constipation.

If you have any of the following ranolazine side effects, seek medical help:

• Difficulty breathing.
• Lightheadedness or feeling like you might pass out.
• Fainting.
• Headaches.
• Chest pain or a fast or pounding heartbeat.
• Kidney problem symptoms including shortness of breath, tiredness, swelling in your feet or ankles or urination which is painful, difficult or little in quantity.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Ranexa?

If you miss a dose of Ranexa, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

What is the generic alternative to Ranexa?

Generic Ranexa is known as ranolazine ER and is available in 500mg and 1000mg strengths. Brand name Ranexa is available in 375mg, 500mg and 750mg.
