Plaquenil contains hydroxychloroquine and is prescribed to treat and prevent acute attacks of malaria. Hydroxychloroquine may also be used to treat discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. Plaquenil does not treat all strands of malaria and you should discuss this medication with your doctor before travelling to an area where malaria is common such as southern Asia, Africa and South America.
