Invokana (canagliflozin) is a diabetes medication used to lower blood sugar levels in people who have type 2 diabetes. Invokana helps your kidneys to remove glucose out of your blood stream. Invokana is most effective as part of a treatment program which may also include diet and exercise.

• Invokana is usually taken once a day before breakfast.
• Drink plenty of liquids while you are taking Invokana.
• Watch for high or low blood sugar levels.
• Invokana should be taken as part of a treatment program which may also include weight control, diet, exercise and blood sugar testing.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history especially of heart problems, circulation problems, nerve problems in your legs or feet, kidney disease, liver disease, dehydration, bladder infections, other urination problems, pancreas disorders, diabetic ketoacidosis or a diabetic foot ulcer or amputation.
• Your current and past use of alcohol.
• If you are on a low-salt diet.

Other information you should also know:

• You should not take Invokana during your 2nd or 3rd pregnancy trimester. Speak to your doctor if you become pregnant.
• Invokana should not be taken if you are breast-feeding.
• This medication is not approved to be used by anyone younger than 18.
• Canagliflozin may affect medical test results. Tell all medical caregivers that you take this medication.

Common side effects of Invokana:

• Increased urination.

If you have any of the following canagliflozin side effects, seek medical help:

• Little, no, painful or burning urination.
• Feeling lightheaded or like you might pass out.
• Pain, tenderness, infections or ulcers in your legs or feet.
• High potassium levels symptoms including loss of movement, irregular heartbeats, weakness or nausea.
• Ketoacidosis symptoms including trouble breathing, unusual drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain or confusion.
• Dehydration symptoms including dizziness, weakness or lightheadedness.
• Genital infection symptoms including fever, feeling unwell and burning, itching, odor, pain, discharge, redness, tenderness or swelling of the genital or rectal area.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Invokana?

If you miss a dose of Invokana, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
