Gabitril contains tiagabine and is used as an anti-epileptic medication alongside other medications in order to treat partial seizures in adults and children over 12. It is thought that tiagabine works by increasing certain chemicals in your brain and by reducing the spread of seizure activity.

Always read the medication information and instructions before using this medication.
Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Take Gabitril with food. It is usually taken with other medications.
• Take tiagabine regularly. Try to take it at the same time every day.
• Your doctor may want to check your blood often.
• Wear a medical alert tag or carry an ID card stating that you take Gabitril.
• Inform all of your medical providers that you take seizure medication.
• Inform your doctor if your conditions worsen.
• Do not start or stop taking Gabitril unless directed to by your doctor.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history especially of seizures, epilepsy, liver disease, mood disorders, depression, suicidal thoughts or actions or abnormal brain weave tests (EEG).
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Tiagabine can cause harm to an unborn baby.
• If you are breastfeeding. This medication may harm a nursing infant.

Other information you should also know:

• Gabitril may cause blurred vision or impair your thinking or reactions. You should avoid driving or doing any other activity that requires clear vision or alertness until you can do it safely.
• Tiagabine is not approved to be used by anyone younger than 12.

Common side effects of Gabitril:

• Stomach pain.
• Diarrhea.
• Dizziness.
• Shaking or nervousness.
• Feeling tired.

If you have any of the following tiagabine side effects, seek medical help:

• Confusion.
• Difficulty concentrating, speaking or paying attention.
• Weakness.
• A seizure that does not stop.
• Mood or mental problems including depression.
• Thoughts of harming or suicidal thoughts.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Gabitril?

If you miss a dose of Gabitril, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
