Flovent Inhaler is an inhaler used to prevent asthma attacks but will not treat an asthma attack that has already started. Flovent is a corticosteroid that prevents the release of substances in your body which can cause inflammation.

  • Prime your inhaler when you are using it for the first time or if it has not been used it for over one week, or if it was dropped. Prime the inhaler by spraying it away from your face.
  • Shake your inhaler for 5 seconds before each use. Inhale Flovent by mouth, usually twice a day (in the morning and evening).
  • Young children may get better results if they use a spacer device with a face mask.
  • If two inhalations are prescribed or if you use other inhalers, then wait approximately 30 seconds between them. Shake your inhaler well between each inhalation. Use Flovent last.
  • Rinse mouth with water after every use to prevent irritation and infections Do not swallow the water.
  • Use Flovent regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. Fluticasone works best when used at evenly spaced times. Use it at the same time each day.
  • It can take up to 2 weeks or longer to feel the full benefit of this drug. Tell your doctor if your condition worsens.

Cautions

Make sure to tell your doctor:

  • If you have any drug or other allergies.
  • If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
  • Your medical history especially of cataracts, glaucoma, tuberculosis in your lungs, hereditary osteoporosis, liver disease, any untreated infection on your body or herpes eye infections.
  • If you smoke or use tobacco.
  • If you are on bed-rest or unable to move around.
  • If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
  • If you have never had measles or chickenpox and haven’t been vaccinated against these conditions. You should avoid people who have infections.

Other information you should also know:

  • You should not use this medicine to treat an asthma attack that has already started
  • It is important to tell all of your doctors and dentists that you use this Flovent or any other corticosteroid before any surgery, dental surgery or emergency procedures.
  • If taken for over a long period, Flovent can slow down a child’s growth. See your doctor regularly to check your child’s height.
  • Fluticasone may occasionally cause wheezing or breathing difficulties immediately after being used. If this happens, use your rescue inhaler and speak to your doctor. Do not use Flovent again until you have spoken to your doctor.

Side Effects of Flovent

Common side effects of Flovent:

  • Headache.
  • Toothache.
  • Painful white patches in your throat or mouth.
  • Sore or irritated throat.
  • Hoarseness.
  • Ear infection.
  • Fever

If you have any of the following Flovent side effects, seek medical help:

  • Shortness of breath.
  • Slowed growth in children.
  • Coughing.
  • Vision changes including blurred vision, seeing halos or bright colors around lights.
  • Eye pain, redness or discomfort.
  • Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.
