Dexilant is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medication which contains dexlansoprazole and is prescribed to treat esophagus and stomach problems including acid reflux and erosive esophagitis. Dexlansoprazole works by decreasing the quantity of acid which is produced by your stomach. This can help to heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus, prevent cancer and ulcers and relieve symptoms including difficulty swallowing, persistent cough and heartburn.

• Dexilant can be taken with or without food and is typically taken once daily.
• If your symptoms often happen after a meal, your doctor may direct you to take Dexilant before the same meal each day.
• Swallow Dexilant capsules whole without chewing or crushing. If you have problems swallowing this medication whole, it can be sprinkled onto a tablespoon of applesauce and swallowed immediately.
• Dexilant works best when it is taken regularly.
• Try to take dexlansoprazole at the same time every day.
• Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history especially of osteoporosis, liver disease, lupus or low levels of magnesium in your blood.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
• If you are breast-feeding.

Other information you should also know:

• Your risk of side effects increases over time.
• This medication may increase the risk of bone fractures. Speak to your doctor about ways to prevent bone loss or fractures.
• Older adults can be more sensitive to the side effects of Dexilant.

Common side effects of Dexilant:

• Nausea, vomiting or stomach pain.
• Gas or diarrhea.
• Headache.
• Mouth pain.
• Cold symptoms including sore throat, sinus pain or stuffy nose.

If you have any of the following dexlansoprazole side effects, seek medical help:

• Abdominal pain or cramping.
• Persistent diarrhea or blood or mucus in your stool. Do not take diarrhea or opioid medication to treat this.
• Fever
• Signs of a low magnesium blood level including irregular, slow or fast heartbeat, seizures or persistent muscle spasms.
• Lupus symptoms including a rash on your nose and cheeks or joint pain.
• Signs of a vitamin B-12 deficiency such as weakness, sore tongue or a numbness in the hands or feet.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Dexilant?

If you miss a dose of Dexilant, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
