Combivent is a combination inhaler which contains the medications ipratropium and albuterol. Combivent is prescribed to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and its symptoms including chest tightness, breathing difficulties, coughing and wheezing. Both ipratropium and albuterol are bronchodilator medications which prevent the tightening and narrowing of your airways which makes breathing easier for you.

• Combivent is typically taken four times a day. Overuse of this medication may be fatal. Do not use more of this medication than prescribed.
• Rinse out your mouth with water without swallowing after using your Combivent inhaler. This will prevent irritation and dry mouth.
• Clean your inhaler mouthpiece once a week.
• Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history especially of heart disease, glaucoma, diabetes, high blood pressure, seizures, overactive thyroid or urination problems.
• Your family history of glaucoma.
• If you are pregnant or planning on pregnancy.
• If you are breast-feeding.

Other information you should also know:

• Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of Combivent.
• You should limit your alcohol intake while using Combivent.
• Combivent can cause vision changes or make you dizzy. You should not drive or do any other activities which require alertness or clear vision until they can be done safely.

Common side effects of Combivent:

• Breathing problems.
• Headaches.
• Cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sore throat, sneezing or coughing.

If you have any of the following Combivent side effects, seek medical help:

• Breathing problems, wheezing or choking after using this medication.
• Chest pain or a fluttering sensation in your chest.
• Vision changes.
• Fast, pounding or irregular heartbeat.
• Tremors or nervousness.
• Constipation.
• Painful or difficult urination.
• Numbness, muscle weakness, tingling or feeling limp.
• Swelling of your ankles and feet.
• Increased thirst or urination.
• Leg cramps.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Combivent?

If you miss a dose of Combivent, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

How often should I use my Combivent inhaler?

Only use your inhaler as prescribed by your doctor. Overuse of Combivent may be fatal.
