Bystolic (nebivolol) is prescribed to treat high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure can help to prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. Bystolic belongs to a group of drugs known as beta-blockers and works by blocking the action of natural substances within your body, on your heart and blood vessels. This helps to lower heart rate, blood pressure, and strain on the heart.

• Take Bystolic by mouth either with or without food, typically once daily. Your dosage is based on your medical condition and your response to treatment.
• Use nebivolol regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. Try to take it at the same time every day.
• It can take several weeks to get the full benefit of this medication. Continue taking this medication even if you feel well.
• Speak to your doctor if you do not get better or if your condition worsens.
• Do not skip doses or stop taking Bystolic unless you have been advised by your doctor.
• Bystolic should be part of a treatment program including diet, exercise, and weight control.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history especially of severe liver disease, heart problems, asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, kidney disease, diabetes, thyroid disorder, circulation problems or pheochromocytoma.
• If you have recently had a heart attack.
• If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Other information you should also know:

• If you are diabetic, Bystolic can mask the fast or pounding heartbeat you would normally feel when your blood sugar falls too low.
• Nebivolol may make you dizzy. Alcohol or marijuana can make you more increase this effect. You should not drive, operate machinery, or do anything which needs alertness until it can be done safely.

Common side effects of Bystolic:

• headache
• tired feeling;
• nausea or stomach pain
• diarrhea
• sleep problems

If you have any of the following Bystolic side effects, seek medical help:

• feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion
• swelling of your ankles or feet
• slow or uneven heartbeats
• numbness or cold feeling in your hands and feet
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat

What should I do if I miss a dose of Bystolic?

If you miss a dose of Bystolic, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

What should I avoid while taking Bystolic

Bystolic can impair your thinking and reactions. Take care if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert.
