Brilinta is an antiplatelet medication which keeps your blood flowing smoothly by preventing the platelets in your blood from sticking together to form blood clots. Brilinta contains ticagrelor and is usually used with low-dose aspirin following a heart attack or angina to lower the risk of serious heart problems, stroke or death. 

Always read the medication information and instructions before using this medication.
Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Brilinta can be taken with or without food and is normally prescribed to be taken with low-dose aspirin.
• If you cannot swallow Brilinta whole, you can crush it and mix it into a glass of water. Once you have drank the mixture, refill the glass and drink it to make sure that the whole dose has been taken.
• Continue taking this medication even when you feel well.
• Do not stop taking Brilinta without talking to your doctor

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history especially of heart problems, bleeding problems, active bleeding, stroke, any history of bleeding from the brain, head injuries, high cholesterol, liver disease, kidney disease, stomach ulcers, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD).
• If you have had any recent serious injuries or surgery.
• If you are pregnant or planning on pregnancy.
• If you are breast-feeding.

Other information you should also know:

• While taking Brilinta, you should avoid activities which can cause injuries or bleeding.

Common side effects of Brilinta:

• Shortness of breath.
• Easy bruising.
• Easier bleeding.

If you have any of the following ticagrelor side effects, seek medical help:

• Chest pain.
• Any bleeding which does not stop, such as prolonged nosebleeds.
• Red, pink or brown urine.
• Black, bloody or tarry stools.
• Shortness of breath while lying down or with mild exertion.
• Red or purple spots under your skin.
• Dizziness or fainting.
• Vomit which looks like coffee grounds.
• Coughing up blood.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Brilinta?

If you miss a dose of Brilinta, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

What else is Brilinta called?

Brilinta is also known as Brilique internationally. Brilique is the same brand name medication with a different name internationally and is not a generic alternative medication. Generic Brilinta is called Ticagrelor.
