Benicar (olmesartan) is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) medication which is prescribed to lower high blood pressure. Benicar may be used alone or alongside other blood pressure medications and works to lower your blood pressure by relaxing your blood vessels and preventing them from narrowing in order to improve your blood flow.

Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Take Benicar orally with or without food.
• Continue taking Benicar even when you feel well. You may need to continue taking blood pressure medications for the rest of your life.
• Your blood pressure may need to be regularly checked.
• Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history especially of heart failure, liver disease, kidney failure or dehydration.
• If you are on a low-salt diet.

Other information you should also know:

• Benicar should not be used during pregnancy. Stop taking this medication and inform your doctor if you become pregnant. Olmesartan can cause injury or death to an unborn baby when taken during your second or third trimesters.
• You should not breast-feed while taking Benicar.

Common side effects of Benicar:

• Dizziness.

If you have any of the following olmesartan side effects, seek medical help:

• Feeling lightheaded or like you might pass out.
• Little or no urination.
• Swelling in your hands or feet.
• Fast heart rate.
• Symptoms of a high potassium level including chest pain, irregular heartbeat, nausea, weakness, loss of movement or a tingly feeling.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Benicar?

If you miss a dose of Benicar, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

Generic Benicar is known as olmesartan and is available in the same 10mg, 20mg and 40mg strengths.
